Migratory Hawks - HELP ME ID?? This morning a flock of about 60 hawks was circling high above the house, riding the thermals. They were just high enough that it was impossible for the camera to lock on them to focus. I had ONE hawk fly low enough that I could get some "decent" (not great) pics of it. About 1/2 of them had the white primary feathers outside of the wrists, as you see in the pics. The other half were the exact same shape and size but had NO white feathers on their wings. Tails were completely nondescript... fairly long, as you can see, and BROWN with 4? narrow darker brown bands, and then a single thicker brown band toward the end. It was not a super-thick band like you see on the Rough-Legged, Red-Shouldered or Short-Tailed hawks. (So I guess we can rule those 3 out!) They held their wings FLAT as they soared; they were not in the dihedral characteristic of Turkey Vultures or Northern Harriers. (They are DEFINITELY not Turkey Vultures, that was never even a consideration) The pics are shown here in maximum resolution to give you the absolute best shots possible. PLEASE comment & discuss!! I'd LOVE to know what these were........ never in my life have I EVER seen a FLOCK of hawks!!!! =) 6 photos |

Jet Skiing Pics I rented a jet ski for a couple of hours on Aug. 12th (my FIRST TIME on a jet ski!!), and LOVED IT!! :) I started in Ephraim and then went along the shore of Peninsula State Park, just past Svens Bluff, and then back & around Horseshoe Island. A huge "thank you" to the great guys at South Shore Pier who allowed me to take the jet ski past their normal boundaries so I could get pics of the lighthouse. Those dudes rock!! 21 photos |

Friday's crazy storms They developed over Washington Island and just kept re-developing and training over the island. Spots on the island got > 5 inches of rain, and the NWS shows like 8 inches in one spot over the lake!! Yeesh!! By the time the line sunk south and then east across the peninsula, the precip was almost entirely over the lake. Sister Bay didn't even get a drop! 5 photos |

The Great Warm-Weather Hike of 4/24/09 I thought I was just going for a quick little hike while it was still warm out (67°) -- I didn't anticipate I'd be seeing an eagle, osprey, and all kinds of warblers!! In fact, had I known they were warblers, I would have taken my binoculars and a bird guide, rather than my camera......... oh well!! Maybe I can get back there next week (and they will still be there, please oh please)!! 18 photos |

The Day I Chased the 'Mackinaw' (from land) Early one morning I was laying in bed and heard the Coast Guard Cutter MACKINAW talking with a fish tug about where their nets were located off Baileys Harbor -- that the MAC was in the area to pull buoys for winter.
